What Is INIS

INIS, the International Nuclear Information System, is the world's leading information system on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. it is operated by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in collaboration with its member states and co-operating international Organizations.

What INIS Does

INIS provides a comprehensive information reference service for literature in nuclear science and technology through processing most of the world's scientific & technical literature that falls within its subject scope.

The literature reported to INIS subdivided into two categories, conventional and non conventional literature.

Conventional literature which is commercially available through the normal distribution channels, such as the books and magazines. Non-Conventional literature comprises all forms of literature, including scientific and technical reports …etc.

The Fields Covered are as follows

Nuclear Power including nuclear engineering & instrumentation, fission reactors, nuclear fuel cycle and radioactive waste management.

  • Nuclear safety
  • Materials of nuclear interest
  • Environmental aspects (of nuclear and non-nuclear energy sources).
  • Economic aspects (of nuclear and non-nuclear energy sources).
  • Safeguards
  • Nuclear applications including production of isotopes and radiation sources, Industrial applications of isotopes and radiation sources, Radioisotopes and radiation in Earth Sciences, Agriculture, Biology and Medicine.
  • Radiation Protection
  • Nuclear Aspects of physics
  • Nuclear Aspects of chemistry
  • Legal Aspects.

INIS Philosophy

The basis of INIS is international co-operation. It is the first system in which both the collection of input and the dissemination of output to users are decentralized. Only the data processing and output production are centralized in the INIS secretariat at IAEA

The Unit Contains

  • The Library contains (books, journals, research and papers.
  • International Nuclear Information System (INIS).

The Nuclear Information Unit in Sudan (NIU)

In 1990 Sudan joined INIS through the Documentation and Information Center of the National Center for Research.

In early 1996 Sudan Atomic Energy Commission handed over the responsibilities of INIS membership through the Nuclear Information Unit (NIU).

In line with the decentralization philosophy, the responsibilities of the unit summarized in:

  • Selection of the relevant nuclear literature produced nationally.
  • Preparation of inputs in accordance with INIS rules and submitting them to the IAEA Providing INIS information services and products to users.
